Just one hour from Shanghai, a jaunt to the scenic town of Wuxi is well worth the trip. What was once a quaint mining town is now a bustling hi-tec business district. With a current population of 4.4 million, Wuxi has been dubbed "little Shanghai". An industrial city split in half by Lake Taihu, heavy barge traffic occupies the main canal with textiles and manufacturing the prominent industries. More recently two large industrial parks have been devoted to new industries, including electric motor manufacturing and software development. Yet Wuxi remains an important tourist destination in the lower Yangtze Delta. Home to Chinese authors such as Qian Zhongshu and painter Xu Beihong, Wuxi is also famous for its Huishan clay figurines, mini sweet pork buns and Lake Tai, while folklore says the nine peaks of Huishan on the western outskirts of Wuxi are the sleeping sons of the legendary Dragon King.
