Surabaya Hotels, Indonesia

The second largest city in Indonesia and the major port of East Java, Surabaya is simply captivating. Also called the ‘City of Heroes’ for its courageous role in Indonesia’s war of independence, Surabaya is home to more than 8 million people. From the vibrant Chinese and Arab quarters to the north of the city and the Zoo and the Mpu Tantular Museum to the south, Surabaya is one highlight after another. In the centre of Surabaya, the main sites are the grand colonial era buildings. On Jalan Pemuda, Grahadi is the graceful and elegant official residence of the governor of East Java. The statue across the road depicts R.T. Soerjo, the first Indonesian governor to live in Grahadi after Independence. In a small garden nearby, the most famous statue in Surabaya, Joko Dolog (1289) depicts King Kertanagara, the last ruler of the Singosari kingdom, in the form of Buddha. Originally erected in the area of Malang, it was brought to Surabaya about three hundred years ago and remains highly revered by locals as the floral offerings all around testify. Other attractions well worth a look include Surabaya Harbour and Tugu Pahlawan Heroes Monument, to name but a few.
