The capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh is the country’s commercial, political and cultural centre.
Situated at the confluence of the Mekong, Bassac and Tonlé Sap Rivers, Phnom Penh has a population of approximately 2 million people.
Once known as the Peal of Asia in the 1920s despite its tumultuous past Phnom Penh still retains an undeniable charm. Home to several impressive temples including Wat Ounalom, Wat Phnom and Wat Lang Ka, Phnom Penh also boasts the spectacular Silver Pagoda, containing artifacts embodying the brilliance and richness of Khmer culture.
The region’s famous Khmer artifacts and crafts can also be seen in all their glory at the National Museum and the Royal Palace, the official residence of King Norodom Sihanouk.
Fashion lovers will appreciate the local jewellery, antiques and the popular kramas (checked cotton scarves) on display at the Central Market, whilst art collectors will adore the traditional works at the School of Fine Arts.
Other tourist attractions include the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Wat Phnom.
