Located in the mountainous Minangkabau area of Sumatra, Bukittinggi is surrounded by three volcanoes: Tandikat, Singgalang and Merapi.
Boasting one amazing attraction after another, Bukittinggi might be small in population but its charm is enormous.
The central landmark in Bukittinggi is the clock tower, which stands proudly in the town square, and the Museum, a traditional extended family house built in the 19th century. Don’t miss the dance performances at the Museum's open stage every Sunday.
Bukittinggi is also home to perhaps the most beautiful natural landmark in western Sumatra: Lake Maninjau. A crater lake featuring amazing hot springs and waterfalls, Lake Maninjau is a must see.
Arts and crafts lovers will adore Kota Gadang. Famous for its handicrafts, in Kota Gadang you can find everything from silversmiths to shawls.
Be sure to check out the Rafflesia Arnoldy Sanctuary, which houses the largest flower on earth but beware of its potent smell.
